"Reliable Man Duo Primed for VRC Derby3 Nov 2017
The Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young pair of Main Stage and Sully give their sire Reliable Man a strong hand in Saturday’s A$1,500,000 VRC Derby on the opening day of the Flemington Carnival in Melbourne. Main Stage currently shares the second line of favouritism at $7.00 for the Group 1 feature behind the High Chaparral colt Ace High ($6.00), while his stablemate Sully is on the third line of betting at $8.50.
Main Stage (ex Kiri) has built an impressive record at Flemington finishing a close second behind Tavistock Abbey in the VRC Derby Trial before coming from last to win the Listed UCI Stakes over 1800m beating Cliff’s Edge and Johnny Vinko. Main Stage has had one start since the UCI Stakes, finishing third to Cliff’s Edge in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic in what appeared to be a ‘muddling run race’ and best suited to the on-pace runners that day. Returning to headquarters with the big expanses of Flemington are sure to play into Main Stage’s hands and providing there is genuine speed in the race he should be right in the thick of things at the end of the 2500m. Main Stage has had 6 starts for 2 wins, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds and will be reunited with Michael Walker who was serving a suspension when he last ran.
Stablemate Sully (ex Lady Winifred) is also among the best backed runners for the blue riband feature on Saturday and the announcement that Hugh Bowman will take the mount only adds further confidence for those who believed he was a serious contender after his Group 1 placing to Ace High in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick last month. Like Main Stage, Sully is has raced on six occasions, resulting in 2 wins, a second, 2 thirds, and a fourth; and including his placing in the Spring Champion Stakes behind tomorrow’s rivals Ace High and Tangled and a close up fourth in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes.
Sully has not run since the Spring Champion Stakes and will bring a fresh set of legs into the Derby.
Reliable Man – the sire of Main Stage and Sully – was also a Derby winner during his racing career, winning the French equivalent the Prix du Jockey Club Gr.1 over 2100m at just his third start – while his sire Dalakhani also took out the Prix du Jockey Club Gr.1, as well as the Irish Derby Gr.1 and the Prix de Arc de l’Arc de Triomphe Gr.1, while Dalakhani’s sire Shirley Heights won both the English & Irish Derby, and his sire Mill Reef was a Champion 3YO winning both the English Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Gr.1 in his three-year-old year. The fact that Reliable Man is out of a Sadler’s Wells mare provides further confidence that his stock will not have any issue with the 2500m of tomorrow’s Derby."

Quote from Westbury Stud´s Facebook
"Huge win by the Reliable Man gelding Sully at Bendigo today as he came from near last - ducked in sharply with 200m to run - and still got up and won!

Trained by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, Sully was the only 3YO in the race and showed an excellent turn-of-foot from the 500m to the line.

While he is very green, the raw talent is evident and he looks to have a bright future!"

Bred by GM & Mrs GM Hewson Sully (ex Lady Winifred) was placed at his only run as a juvenile and put paid to his rivals in no uncertain fashion as he looped the field and went on to win comfortably today.

The Busuttin/Young partnership also ran another son of Reliable Man - Main Stage - yesterday at Cranbourne with the gelding running home strongly for a good second."

First Winner for Reliable Man

Belle Du Nord

Tara Madgwick - Saturday, 18 March 2017

Reliable Man was a multiple Group One winner during his illustrious racing career and he could be in line for early top-flight stallion honours following a stylish victory from a first crop daughter at Trentham.

Belle du Nord
The Westbury Stud stallion, who was successful at the elite level in France and in Australia, has only had a handful of representatives and Belle du Nord opened the handsome grey's account on Saturday.

The youngster made a highly favourable impression on rider Lisa Allpress when they combined for a hollow win in the Richardson Racing 2YO Premier.

"She's a lovely, big type and one of nicest types I've sat on for a while," she said. "She gave me a really good feel and she just powered through them."

Belle du Nord came from off the pace with a sizzling finish to distance her rivals and put her in line for a crack at the Gr.1 Courtesy Ford Manawatu Sires' Produce Stakes at Awapuni on April 1.

The filly, who is a half-sister to the Group performer What Choux Want, had finished runner-up on debut at Te Aroha last month before she disappointed when finishing among the tail-enders in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes.

"She's always showed a lot of ability and it was a mystery what happened in the Breeders' Stakes," said David Browne, who trains Belle du Nord with his wife Emma-Lee at Cambridge.

"It's nice to see her back and we may head on to the Sires' Produce Stakes now."

Belle du Nord waltzed home by three and three-quarter lengths from Aloisia, who hit the line well, and the resuming Hard Merchandize. – NZ Racing Desk.
